What unlocking really means

Unlocking isn't cracking a platform, and it doesn't touch your client. Native IP vs residential IP

These three terms get used interchangeably, but they don't mean the same thing — and they directly affect the risk score a platform gives you.

Native IP means the IP block's registered location matches where it actually exits, and the block is held by a local carrier or local organization. When the platform checks the ASN, it sees a normal local network, the region matches the route exit, and the risk score stays normal.

Broadcast IP is the opposite: the IP is registered in country A but actually exits in country B. A reverse lookup shows that registration and routing don't match, and the risk score drops. The classic symptom is that the Netflix homepage loads and search returns results, but opening an episode throws a proxy error. Many cheap routes use broadcast IPs to pass themselves off as regional nodes, so it's worth asking before you buy.

Residential IP means the address block comes from a local broadband carrier, which scores best because it's indistinguishable from a real household user. The trade-off is high bandwidth cost and a limited pool of addresses, which is why most residential routes on the market are metered by traffic. Data center IP comes from cloud providers and data centers, and it isn't automatically unusable — what matters is whether the block has been heavily abused and whether the provider maintains and rotates its exits.

The conclusion isn't “you must have residential IP”; it's two rules: the IP's registered location must match the route's exit region, and the IP must not be mass-flagged by the platform. How much bandwidth do 4K and Dolby Vision need?

Resolution isn't the single variable — bitrate is. The platform sets a target bitrate for the source tier, then raises or lowers it in real time based on your bandwidth and packet loss. So “is the bandwidth enough” has two layers: is the peak enough, and can it stay enough.

General troubleshooting order

  1. Disconnect and reconnect on another route in the same region. Most errors mean a single exit was temporarily flagged, and switching fixes it.
  2. Clear browser cookies, or sign in again in a private window. Platforms store region data in the session, and stale data keeps the old verdict.
  3. Check whether DNS resolution matches the exit region. A DNS leak shows the platform two conflicting region signals.
  4. Test on another device. Mobile and TV apps usually apply looser risk rules than browsers, so it's common for the same route to play in an app and fail in a browser.
  5. Test another region. Risk strictness varies by region on the same platform, and one blocked region doesn't mean all of them are.
