On Windows, order matters more than tricks: install the client first, then import your subscription, then choose a route, and only then verify and set auto-start. This guide follows that order, and each step solves one problem, so when something breaks you can tell which layer is at fault.

01Before You Start: What Each of the Three Pieces Does

Cross-border access on Windows relies on three pieces working together: the client builds the connection and handles split routing, the subscription link delivers the route list to the client, and the route itself carries the traffic. Miss any one of them and the later steps stall.

The Client: The App Running on Your PC

The client is the app you install on Windows. It does three things: opens an encrypted connection to a route, decides by rule which traffic goes through that route, and shows you the current connection status. Sign in to the VPNDU Windows client and it fetches your subscription automatically — protocol settings are handled for you, with nothing to fill in by hand.

The Subscription Link: A URL That Works Like a Password

A subscription link is a URL with credentials baked in. The client fetches it on a schedule and pulls the latest route list to your machine — region, city, route type, and protocol settings are all in that list. Treat it like a password: anyone who has the link can connect through your routes and burn through your data allowance. Don't post it in group chats or leave it visible in public screenshots.

Routes: The Variable That Decides Peak-Hour Performance

A route is the international exit your traffic leaves through. Two routes both labelled “Japan · Tokyo” can be built completely differently: an IEPL dedicated line runs on a private channel, a relay passes through the public international segment, and a direct route depends entirely on your local connection. For 4K, the route type matters more than the region name.

02Step 1: Install the Windows Client

Open the VPNDU homepage and click “Try It Free” in the hero section to reach the dashboard. No email address is required to get started; once you're in, grab the Windows installer from the dashboard's download page.

  1. Get the installer from the dashboard download page, not from a third-party download site.
  2. Double-click to run it. If SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC”, click More info → Run anyway — that prompt is common for freshly released installers and isn't an error.
  3. Allow the installer to add the virtual network adapter driver. The client needs that adapter to take over system-wide traffic, so a permission prompt appears here — click Yes.
  4. When the install finishes, open the main window. Before hitting Connect, check three things: the connection toggle, the route list, and the settings entry.

03Step 2: Import Your Subscription Link

Open the client and you usually have two options: sign in to your account inside the client and let the route list sync automatically, or paste the subscription link by hand. The first is less work; the second is what you need when using a third-party client.

Manual Import in Four Steps

  1. Find the subscription section in your dashboard and copy the whole link. Drop a single character from the parameters at the end and the fetch will fail.
  2. In the client, open Subscriptions / Profiles, choose Add Subscription, paste the link, give it a name you'll recognise (vpndu-main, for example), and save.
  3. Click Update Subscription and wait for the list to refresh. On success you'll see routes grouped by region, each with its city and route type.
  4. If the update fails, check in this order: is the system clock accurate, is another proxy app holding the port, and is the subscription link complete?

Two Subscription Formats

The universal subscription is usually a base64-encoded node list, while Clash-based clients use a YAML config. The content is the same, just formatted differently — use the matching copy button in your dashboard.

A subscription link is as good as a password. Share it and someone else can connect through your routes on your allowance. Don't post it in group chats or forums, and don't leave the full link visible in screenshots.

04Step 3: Choose a Route

Each row in the route list usually has four fields: country/region, city, route type, and latency. Latency is the round-trip time from your client to the node — it reflects handshake speed only, not bandwidth, and says nothing about peak-hour performance.

Pick by use case: for 4K, favour IEPL dedicated lines in Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore; a relay is plenty for everyday browsing; keep direct routes as backup. Save at least two or three routes per region, test each one during peak hours (roughly 20:00–23:00), then settle on your picks.

Don't pick routes on latency alone: a low-latency route with little spare bandwidth loads pages instantly during the day and still buffers on 4K at peak hours.

Bottom line: 4K comes down to route type and spare bandwidth, not the region name. Within a region, favour IEPL dedicated lines; treat latency numbers as a rough guide and let peak-hour testing decide.

05Step 4: Verify It's Working

Connected doesn't mean working. When the client says Connected, all it means is the tunnel to the node is up; whether traffic is actually routed the way you want takes three checks.

Check 1: Exit IP

Open the site's network check page, or any IP lookup page, and see whether the country and city match the route you picked. If it still shows your local city, your traffic isn't going through the route — usually because a split-routing rule sends that domain direct.

Check 2: DNS Resolution Path

The check page usually lists the DNS servers actually in use. If your local ISP's servers show up, name resolution isn't going through the proxy side, and streaming sites will often report a region mismatch. First confirm the client's DNS proxy option is on, then look for other software hijacking system DNS.

Check 3: Flush the Cache

After switching routes or changing split-routing rules, old resolution results may still sit in the cache. Open Command Prompt and run these two commands in order:

nslookup myip.opendns.com resolver1.opendns.com

The first clears the local DNS resolver cache; the second has OpenDNS's resolver echo back the exit IP it sees, which cross-checks the result from Check 1. Neither command changes any system setting.

06Step 5: Auto-Start and Split Routing

The last step keeps this setup working after a reboot without disrupting local traffic.

Auto-Start on Boot

Find Launch at startup in the client settings (some clients call it Start with system) and turn it on. The client then starts in the background and connects with the system, which suits a desktop that stays on one network. If you're on a laptop that hops between networks, leave it off and connect manually when you need it.

Split Routing Rules

Split-routing rules decide which traffic goes through a route and which goes direct. The three common dimensions are domain, IP range, and process. Three practical rules:

Re-Check After Every Change

After saving rules, restart the client or reload the config, then repeat the three checks from Step 4: exit IP, DNS resolution, and whether playback starts. A split-routing change only counts once you've verified it again.

07Common Snags at a Glance

These six cases cover most snags. Change only one variable at a time when troubleshooting, or you won't know which layer the problem is in.

If a route never connects, switch to another route in the same region first, then decide whether the problem is the client or the route. Change client settings and the route at the same time and you lose your reference point.

08After the Five Steps

The order of these five steps isn't optional: without a client you can't import a subscription, without a subscription you can't pick a route, without a route there's nothing to verify, and only after verification do auto-start and split routing make sense. Do it backwards — auto-start first, then fiddle with split routing — and you introduce two variables at once, making it impossible to tell which layer broke.
